| Zara Katz is an emerging arts professional, gallery manager, curator, and photographer. Visual culture research—in theory and practice—have been her main focus for over eight years, leading to extensive experience in the field of contemporary photography, art and cultural research. She received her BA in 2006 from the University of California, Santa Cruz, in Anthropology and Photography, where she integrated cultural anthropology and sociology through the medium of fine art photography. In 2007, Zara completed an intensive photography residency at the Main Media Workshop, where she honed her photojournalism practice. In 2008, she traveled to India to work as an assistant for Indian photographers, Gauri Gill and Ketaki Sheth, two well-established and represented documentary photographers in South Asia and the US. Upon her return, in Fall of 2008, she began interning at the FiftyCrows Foundation, a San Francisco based, social change photography non-profit. In October of 2009, when the FiftyCrows Gallery reopened in the 49 Geary Building, Zara became the Gallery Manager and helped to produce exhibitions with Ed Kashi, Mimi Chakarova, and Darcy Padilla. Currently, Zara is currently working at th Oakland Museum of California and interning at the San Francisco Arts Commission as a curatorial and gallery assistant, as well as documenting her life in East Oakland. |
